A small community church in Gary is taking the sting out of a lawyer visit by offering free legal advice from an attorney for those in need.

Metropolitan Baptist Church had its first legal clinic last week with a healthy turnout. It started as a seed of an idea by Pastor Kenneth Kelley, and he said, hopefully will grow to help community members.

“Our community has a good number of people who have legal challenges,” Kelley said. “They need free or affordable assistance that will help them in the pursuit of wholeness in their faith, family and future to live a good quality of life.”

The legal clinic is sponsored by the Legacy Foundation of Merrillville and includes the Gospel Justice Initiative and Attorney Christopher Purnell of Indianapolis.

“It’s very helpful,” said church member Gail Hogan.

The legal clinic also partnered with Indiana Legal Services, Lake County Township, and Indiana University Northwest. Legal aid matters can include denial of unemployment benefits, social security benefits, consumer credit issues, and eviction and other landlord tenant lawsuits.

It is open to the public and held once a month from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at the Metropolitan Baptist Church 4500 Harrison St. in Gary. There also is a financial clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays after the legal clinic at the church. For more information call the church office at 219-882-3461.
